Sorry I've been absent for so long, we've had a busy week... My parents flew up to Anchorage on Thanksgiving afternoon and stayed through yesterday. Although it was a bit on the chilly side, we had gorgeous, sunny skies the entire week. On Friday, we drove up to the Glen Alps trailhead and walked on the Powerline Trail. This is a great trail for cross country skiing but due to the lack of a significant amount of snow so far it was easily walkable. Also, up at the trailhead is short trail overlooking Anchorage and we were lucky enough to see Mt McKinley in the distance. On clear days Mt McKinley and Mt Foraker are visible from Anchorage.
On Saturday, we took off for a drive down to Seward which is about 2 hours away. It's one of the most scenic drives in Alaska passing through Turnigan Arm and the Chugach Mountains down to the Kenai Peninsula. We stopped a few times along the drive to take pictures of the sun coming up over the mountains and the tranquil water of Cook Inlet. Once down in Seward, we found a place to eat some lunch and then walked down by the port to look at the fishing ships. Seward is a popular fishing village along the Kenai Peninsula and is also the Northernmost stop for cruise ships. Since it's a fishing village most of the town was shut down for the season. We will definitely make our way down there again in the summer for some fishing. On the way home, we attempted to drive up to the normally accessible Exit Glacier but the road to it was closed for the winter (Seward received a lot of rain/flooding a few months ago which washed out the road.) Mom has a high school classmate that happens to live in Seward and operates a little Inn, Stoney Creek Inn, so we stopped by to surprise him. He was extremely surprised to see her :) He built a cozy 5 room inn tucked back in the trees and has a hot tub/sauna overlooking a salmon spawning creek. I think we'll look into staying there at some point. We were enjoying our drive back, when we encountered backed up traffic. We ended up stopped in traffic for 4 LONG hours due to an accident near Girdwood. I think the next time we drive down there we'll pack a cooler ;)

We had a Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday evening and did some Christmas shopping. I had to work during the week but Mom & Dad kept busy doing some projects around our house. They also went for a walk along the shoreline downtown one day and drove up to Eagle River (about 20 miles North of Anchorage) another day. Overall, it was a great week and a lot of fun to show our first guests our house and around Alaska. I think they had their fill of halibut and salmon. They even found some fun souvenirs to take home (sweatshirt from a local restaurant for Dad :) ) They're looking forward to coming up again in the summer to see how different things look with some color and more daylight!
